The excretion of phosphatase in the faeces.

چکیده
The mucous membrane of the smnall intestine is rich in phosphatase which can be liberated into the blood stream or into the intestinal secretion. This accounts for a part of the faecal phosphatase. Estimation of the faecal phosphatase may therefore enable one to study biochemically the activity of the mucous membrane of the small intestine in the intact animal. The early publications on faecal phosphatase are reviewed by Folley & Kay [1936]. Heymann [1933] found the phosphatase activity to be reduced in rickets, spasmophilia and intestinal infantilism. Armstrong [1936] described the preparation of a strong phosphatase concentrate from dog faeces. Koster's [1938, 1939] most striking finding was the absence of phosphatase from the faeces in some cases of non-tropical sprue. In leukaemia values above the normal range were found. Duckworth & Godden [1941] used faecal phosphatase estimations to measure intestinal secretory activity in rats. The experiments to be described were performed on the stools of normal adults between 20 and 35 years of age, free from any gross peculiarities of dietetic habit.

Background: Strongyloides stercoralis is prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. S. stercoralis is the only nematodes with the ability to multiply in its host's body via autoinfection transmission. Larvae detection in faeces is difficult partly because of low egg production and irregular larvae excretion in faeces. Serologic tests (ELISA, IFA) are also diagnostic, however, S...
متن کاملComparison of growth rate and fatty acid profile of Nereis diversicolor fed with faeces and food of rainbow trout
Rainbow trout farms released always a large amount of organic matter into the environment, resulting in environmental contamination. If these waste can be used as a food source for the production of a secondary organism such as Nereis diversicolor, in addition to increasing production, it will reduce the volume of contamination originating from fish farms. In this regard, determining the nutrit...
متن کاملDietary fructo-oligosaccharides in healthy adults do not negatively affect faecal cytotoxicity: a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial.
Fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) are widely used in commercial food products. Most studies on FOS concern the health benefits, but some negative effects were recently reported concerning the faecal cytotoxicity and excretion of mucin-type oligosaccharides in combination with a Ca-restricted diet. The present study was performed to investigate whether these effects of FOS are observed in adults con...
متن کاملIsolation of Clostridium difficile and molecular detection of binary and A/B toxins in faeces of dogs
The aim of this study was to isolate Clostridium difficile from dogs’ faeces, and to study the frequency of its virulence genes. A total of 151 samples of dogs’ faeces were collected. The isolation of C. difficile was performed by using the bacterial culture methods followed by DNA extraction using boiling method. Multiplex PCR method was performed for identification of tcdA, tcdB, cdtA and cdt...
متن کاملThe influence of dietary fibre on secretory activities of the alimentary tract: Observations on faecal phosphatase excretion and calcium and nitrogen balances of rats.
SoME years ago, during an investigation of the influence of rate of growth on the development of rickets in sheep, parallel studies were undertaken using the rat. Owing to the difficulty of obtaining from rats blood samples sufficiently large for phosphatase determination, and having in mind the observations ofHeymann [1930; 1931; 1933] on the faecal excretion of phosphatase in rickets, the con...
